What are the laws of repossession?

MY car got repossessed after only 2months of not making payments, can they repossess the car that fast? And the bank said that if they action the car off what ever is left over I owe. But I don't understand why I would owe if they took the car back! what should I do? get a lawyer? HELP?!?!
