Who is liable for the outstanding money?

UK only - For a friend: two cousins had a joint mortgage. When things didn't work out, both abandoned the property. The property has since been repossessed. The amount left owing on the house is 34 grand. If one cousin now goes bankrupt is the other cousin liable for the 34 grand?
